How Credentialing Drove 250% Revenue Growth for BSCAI

Facility services professionals play a key role in keeping buildings clean, safe and running smoothly. The Building Service Contractors Association International (BSCAI) wanted to change that.

With more than 1,000 member companies across the U.S. and 15 other countries, BSCAI recognized the need for a stronger, more consistent approach to professional development. With Smithbucklin, BSCAI set out to update, modernize and expand its credentialing programs, raising industry awareness while providing professionals meaningful ways to advance their careers.

Facility services is a specialized field, and much of the work happens behind the scenes. Because customers often hire or source commercial cleaning companies through a Request for Proposal (RFP) and bidding processes, many firms can appear similar on paper. Without clear differentiators, customers may focus primarily on price, reducing a vital service to a commodity.

BSCAI saw an opportunity to help members stand out in the marketplace while also equipping professionals with tools to deepen their knowledge, earn recognition and grow in their roles.

We updated and modernized existing credentials and launched new programs tailored to the realities of the field. By aligning credentials with the practical knowledge needed at each career stage, BSCAI established a clear path for professionals in the industry.

Together, we launched a refreshed set of credentials, including:

• Certified Building Service Executive (CBSE): For executive leaders who oversee operations and drive strategy.
• Registered Building Service Manager (RBSM): For managers who run daily operations and teams focused on building capable managers who run day-to-day operations.
• Registered Building Supply Professional (RBSP): For vendors and suppliers serving the industry.
• Certified Site Supervisor (CSS): For site leaders skilled in operations, safety, customer service, and team management.

• 250% growth in revenue. These designations helped members stand out in a crowded market and generated new revenue for BSCAI, driving gains in membership, professional development, event attendance and overall member engagement.
• A stronger reputation for the industry. BSCAI’s credentials now serve as benchmarks of professionalism and capability for individuals, member companies and customers.
