Professionals in the credentialing field set and uphold standards across industries—but until recently, there was no credential that recognized their expertise.
The Institute for Credentialing Excellence (I.C.E.) set out to change that.
With support from a dedicated group of I.C.E. members, the I.C.E. Board of Directors, and Smithbucklin, I.C.E. created the I.C.E. Certified Credentialing Professional® (ICE-CCP®), a certification designed for the people who build, manage, and lead credentialing programs. The goal: to validate their skills, support career growth, and strengthen their impact within their organizations.
The Opportunity
Even though credentialing professionals play a key role in maintaining standards across industries, they didn’t have a formal way to show what they know. To address this gap, the ICE-CCP® was designed not only to support individual career growth but raise the visibility of the profession—helping organizations better understand the value credentialing experts bring to the table.
What We Did Together
Through a thoughtful, research-backed process, we:
- Used existing data, job analyses, and insights from previous programs—like the Certificate Program for the Credentialing Specialist—as a foundation.
- Confirmed demand through interviews, surveys, and industry feedback.
- Tested the program with a beta exam and refined it based on feedback.
- Priced it with accessibility in mind, ensuring wide participation of early testers while supporting I.C.E.’s mission.
The Results
- Over 325 certified professionals. That number continues to grow as interest builds across the industry.
- Increased member engagement. Credentialing Specialist certificate holders now view the ICE-CCP® as the next step in their professional journey.
- Enhanced product opportunities. While not required, candidates can make use of existing resources, such as Certification: The I.C.E. Handbook, as well as new programs to help them prepare to certify or recertify.
- Clearer career paths. The ICE-CCP® gives professionals and employers a shared benchmark for success.
- New revenue stream. As the program grows, it will help fund educational initiatives and strategic priorities.
Why It Worked
I.C.E. addressed a long-standing need the credentialing field was missing, giving credentialing professionals the recognition they’ve earned and setting the field up for continued growth.
