The health of an association is defined by more than just its longevity, it’s also about its ability to stay competitive, create value, and evolve. Like humans, associations have “vital signs” that that offer insight into how well they’re functioning today—and how prepared they are for the future. By measuring and strengthening eight key indicators, associations can enhance their relevance, adaptability, and prospects for future success.
1. Leadership
Healthy associations have effective and inspired leadership among key board and staff who are aligned on the future vision, strategy, and desired outcomes. When everyone understands and is committed to where the organization is headed and how to get there, it creates the culture of performance excellence and innovation required for growth.
2. Engagement
Healthy associations have engaged, growing participation and a sense of community within their core audiences (i.e., members, customers, supporters). This is a sign that people find real value in what the organization offers.
3. Product/Program Momentum
The core offerings of a healthy association are stable, valuable, gaining traction, and financially sound. Leadership regularly reviews the portfolio and makes thoughtful decisions about innovation, diversification, or sunsetting programs based on
data, feedback, and strategic direction.
4. Financial Fitness
Healthy associations deliver on their missions without regularly drawing on reserves and have levers to help manage through unexpected bumps in the road. Consistent growth in operating revenue and operating margin are also signs of health.
5. Investment Capital
Beyond the day-to-day financials, healthy associations have enough reserves to weather a storm and invest in new opportunities.
6. A Strong Competitive Position
A healthy association stands out. It fills a need, has a clear identity, and offers something its participants can’t get elsewhere. This means a growing reputation, strong brand positioning, demonstrated success vs. competing organizations, and
being a desired partner for strategic alliances.
7. Growth Opportunities
Healthy associations are conscious of avenues for long-term growth, whether through increased market share, growth in their industry, field, or profession, or reaching new audiences.
8. Operational Effectiveness
At healthy associations, things run smoothly behind the scenes with efficient and effective processes and prioritized allocation of resources. Staff and volunteers use their time wisely, deploying technology where advisable, making decisions based on data, and having modern governance and risk management practices in place.
By keeping a close eye on these eight vital signs, associations can develop a clear, holistic snapshot of an association’s overall health. When each is monitored and strengthened, they work together to keep the organization resilient, adaptable, and primed for long-term success.
